GRAD DIP EMS
COURSE AIMS
The course will provide you with the the opportunity to develop the professional interventions and values you will need to practise as an Advanced Paramedic in the Irish health service. Advanced Paramedics have an important leadership role both in managing emergencies and in contributing to the development of EMS in Ireland.
ADMISSION CRITERIA
Nominations are submitted to UCD through the Health Service Executive ( HSE) and Dublin Fire Brigade (DFB). HSE employees should contact their local service regarding the internal application process. The following are the minimum entry requirements. Nominees must:
- Have their name entered on the Pre-Hospital Emergency Care Council Paramedic Register.
- Possess the UCD Diploma in Emergency Medical Technology or a third level equivalent.
- Be currently employed within the State by a healthcare provider, pre-hospital care training organisation or statutory agency charged with the responsibility for standards, education and training in the field of pre-hospital emergency care.
- Possess a minimum of 2 years post qualification experience at DipEMT/DipEMS level.
- Demonstrate a commitment to continuing professional development (CPD) within the realms of pre-hospital care. Be willing to commit to the ongoing development of the Advanced Paramedic Training programme for a minimum period of three years..

M SC EMS (ADVANCED PARAMEDIC)
COURSE AIMS
Candidates registered for the GradDipEMS may choose to apply for completion of the MScEMS over two additional semesters. Candidates will complete a minor thesis by primary research in a relevant area of pre-hospital emergency care and will acquire a further 30 ECTS credits.
ENTRY CRITERIA Access to this module is limited to those holding the GradDipEMS or HDipEMS. Candidates will complete a primary research project in a subject area related to the practice of pre-hospital emergency care. A research proposal must be submitted and approved before acceptance to the module. External and internal assessors will report on the completed dissertation.

Module MDCS40960 Research Dissertation (30 ECTS)
Candidates will demonstrate:
- familiarity with study design, selection of appropriate methodologies and samples and power calculations
- ability to prepare a research proposal and ethics/funding applications as required
- data collection, collation, analysis and interpretation skills
- ability to prepare and present a completed thesis, including an appropriate literature search and critique of the completed research

COURSE AIMS
The programme is primarily oriented towards Registered Medical Practitioners whose roles will require training in these areas such as Medical Advisors to Ambulance Services or members of Immediate Care Schemes. Other registered practitioners will always be required to work within their relevant scope of practice. All participants will build on and contribute their existing clinical expertise and experience to the development of an effective inter-professional approach to patient care in this most demanding of settings.
Year 1 of the programme will introduce candidates to the core competencies required to manage medical and trauma emergencies in both adults and children in the pre-hospital phase of care. Therapeutics, skills training and care in special circumstances, including aspects of retrieval care, will be included in this phase.
Year 2 will include critical appraisal skills, a research dissertation and a clinical placement involving delivery of advanced pre-hospital emergency care.
The face to face components of the course will mainly be at UCD, these sessions will be held over various weekends and 0.5 - 1.0 day at the Schools of Medicine in UCD campus.

- Nurses currently registered with An Bord Altranais and in possession of medical indemnity insurance for the purposes of the course (for MSc EMS)
- Advanced Paramedics currently registered with the Pre-Hospital Emergency Care Council and in possession of indemnity insurance for the purposes of the course (for MScEMS)
